My predictions of Record Bali Tourism came true:
Bali to Exceed 2 Million Foreign Visitors in 2009?
Looking at foreign tourist arrivals to Bali through the end of July 2009, here are the main highlights:
• June 2009 arrivals totaled 190,617 or 11.5% better than the record breaking performance of June 2008.
• July 2009 arrivals hit an astounding 224,636 – that's a whole 22.7% ahead of the same month one year before.
• January – July 2009 arrivals totaled 1,242,297 – an improvement of 11.87% year on year with 2008.
• If Bali can maintain the current 11.87% rate of growth through the end of 2009, total arrivals for the current year will easily surpass 2 million visitors for the first time in history, ending with 2.2 million foreign visitors.
• Australia is now firmly in possession of the #1 post as the largest source of foreign visitors to Bali, displacing Japan from the top ranking it's held for decades. Australia arrivals through the end of July totaled 227,402 as compared to Japan's 186,029 for the same period. By extension, Australia arrivals through the end of July were up 38.07%, while Japanese arrivals are down 10.78%.
• The People's Republic of China is now the 3rd largest source of visitors to Bali, increasing 61.09% to 116,806 for the first seven months of the year ending in July. This strong growth has moved the PRC up two places from its former rank at #5,
• Malaysia arrivals increased year-on-year by 21.66% through the end of July at 83,809 visitors. It remains to be seen if the current cross-border spitting match will be reflected in August and September arrivals to Bali ex Malaysia. Malaysian arrivals now hold the 4th ranking, up from 6th last year.
• South Korean arrivals decreased year-on-year by 5.96% for January-July 2009 at 74,055 securing the 5th ranking in terms of main source markets for Bali tourism.
• Taiwan arrivals have taken a beating in 2009, decreasing 18.44% for January – July to total 69,363. Taiwan, which once was the third largest contributor of visitors to Bali, has slipped to the number six ranking.
• While Europe in general struggles with its economies, the French market is proving very robust for Bali tourism, increasing 50.99% in the first seven months of 2009, totaling 59.488.
• Market shares for Bali tourism at the end of July 2009: Asia Pacific 57.89%; ASEAN 19.97%, Europe 25.44%; the Americas 5.02%; Africa 0.5% and the Middle East 0.18%. The Asia-Pacific including ASEAN constitutes 77.86% of all Bali's foreign tourism arrivals.
Bali Earthquake exaggerated by the press

Editors Note: As usual the press has over exaggerated the Bali earthquake which actually was over 65 KM from Bali at reported depth of 13.9 KM in the ocean.
Although there has been 9 people hospitalized there has been no deaths and Several of those injuries were sustained while hurrying out of buildings.
Tourist either on the island or planing on visiting should have no fear of a serious a earthquake here. I have lived here for 13 years and although earthquakes are frequent they are usually of low intensity which may be natures way of releasing tension before it builds up .

6.4-magnitude earthquake jolts Indonesia's Bali:
It occurred 36 kilometres beneath the seabed, but the quake did not trigger a tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage from the quake, the second strong earthquake to jolts Indonesia within several hours.
Another 6.4-magnitude quake struck eastern Indonesian islands on North Maluku province about five hours earlier on late Friday. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, sits along the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
On September 2, a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck West Java province, killing more than 70 people and leaving dozens of others missing. Hundreds of others were injured and tens of thousands of homes were damaged.
A major earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck in December 2004, leaving more than 170,000 people dead or missing in Indonesia's Aceh province and half a million people homeless.
Dismal weather puts a damper on Bali during the holidays:
Despite the dry season, the south east of Bali has experienced cold and wet weather due to the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) in the upper stratosphere, a weather official said Tuesday.
The MJO has brought rain and low temperatures to the holiday island during
the Idul Fitri break.
On Monday, a light shower of rain fell continuously for most of the day in parts of Denpasar and Gianyar, forcing residents to stay at home.
In Gianyar's tourism resort of Ubud, the light shower turned into torrential rain in the evening, flooding several village roads and compelling domestic visitors to take shelter inside their shuttle buses.
A weather forecaster with the Bali Office of Meteorology, Made Dwijendra, said Tuesday the MJO traveled in a 30 to 60 day cycles and this was the second time this year that Bali had been affected by the recently confirmed weather pattern.
The MJO, unlike the horizontally traveling El Nino, moves vertically up from the Equator then easterly, bringing rain and cooler weather to parts of India, the Indian Ocean and occasionally Bali.
Recorded temperatures for September are several degrees lower than average, according to Dwijendra, with light rain averaging 7.5 millimeters daily. Average September temperatures fell between 32 to 28 degrees Celsius, but have fallen further to between 29 and 21 degrees Celsius following the MJO.
"Bali's weather at the moment is not normal.
"It should be dry, but there are disturbances in the upper atmosphere known as the MJO. This started on September 3, cleared between September 13 to 15 and was impacting weather conditions again on September 17. It is now expected to clear by September 26," said Dwijendra of the constant rain that has been particularly heavy in Badung and Gianyar regencies during the Idul Fitri holiday.
The MJO is a recently observed meteorological phenomenon that is still being studied, according to Dwijendra, the relationship between the MJO and climate change is yet to be established.
As the MJO moves east from Bali, local weather is expected to improve, becoming warm and dry again.

He said the extra flights were intended to carry Idul Fitri holiday travelers and other holiday makers who failed to get seats on scheduled flights. Ngurah Jaya said the number of domestic tourists arriving in Bali from various cities in Indonesia in the past one week exceeded that of Idul Fitri holiday travelers leaving the resort island for their home villages.
He said that since seven days before Idul Fitri until Sunday, Sept 20, 2009, 51,653 passengers arrived on 422 flights at Ngurah Rai airport, while 41,767 others depart from the airport on 424 flights to various destinatins.
Ngurah Jaya said the launch of extra flights from Ngurah Rai airport was started with the increase of passengers going to their home villages for Idul Fitri holidays.
"The extra flights will also be held until the holiday makers are returning from their hometowns," Ngurah Jaya said. He said that in the 24 hours on Tuesday (5 days ahead of Idul Fitri), 57 planes carrying 5,960 passengers landed at Ngurah Rai.
Last Wednesday, a total of 56 planes carrying 5,559 passengers, and another extra flight with 50 passengers left the airport. He also said that the number of international flights, both arrivals and departures, did not change much.
In the meantime, Idul Fitri transportation coordinator for Bali Sugeng Sugianto said at least 24 wide-bodied aircraft were ready for extra flights from Ngurah Rai to various destinations in Indonesia and back. The planes with unscheduled flights belonged to a number of airline companies in Indonesia.

Behind the project is Mari Anne Feet, who settled down in Bali after living and traveling throughout the world for two decades.
For Mari Anne, Mormors Hus - or "Grandmother's House" - as the restaurant is called, is more than a business idea. "This has always been my dream," she said. "I love cooking!"
She chose the name, Mormors Hus, in recognition of the happy days of her childhood, spent at her grandmother's house, savoring salmon, meatballs and waffles.
"No one cooked like granny! However, it wasn't just about the food - it was so pleasant to spend time there too. I hope to recreate a similar oasis here, a sweet escape, somewhere people feel at home and want to stay a while, relax and share experiences."
Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Eivind S. Homme, who flew in with several other diplomats from Jakarta to attend the opening, said he hoped Mormors Hus would be more than a restaurant.
"I hope this can become a gathering place for all Scandinavians in Bali, as well as a sort of *Norway House', where people from Indonesia and other countries can experience Norwegian food and culture," he said.
"Because, this is after all what life is really about - such moments of togetherness over eating and drinking."
Previously posted in the Philippines, Italy, the US and China, the ambassador said he had once come across a Norwegian bar in Beijing but had never before had the pleasure of dining in a proper Norwegian restaurant abroad. As he does not want to miss this opportunity, he has already reserved a table for the next time he visits the island, he said.
The dishes will be simple, based on quality ingredients and natural flavors.
"I grew up in the countryside and have always felt that food and nature go together," Mari Anne explained.
On the menu is typical Norwegian food such as poached salmon, smoked salmon and meatballs - the way her grandmother made them, with just the right mix of pork and beef - as well as waffles, potato cakes, cinnamon rolls and pancakes with blueberry jam, plus some Italian and Indian dishes.
"Since Norwegian food is not as spicy as Indonesian food, you can taste the ingredients better - the naturalness of the food," Mari Anne said, promising to invite everyone who wants for a traditional Christmas dinner.
Mormors Hus is located on the outskirts of Legian, south Bali, in a traditional, Javanese building. The brown wooden house is tall and long with a pointy roof.
"It actually looks very similar to a traditional Norwegian Stave Church," Marie Anne said. "I fell madly in love with this place the first time I saw it, and I managed to convince the owner to rent it to me, even though other people were offering him more money."
The roughly 70 people present at the opening - including Italians, Germans, Indonesians, Danish and English, as well as Norwegians - were impressed by the ambience Mari Anne managed to create.
The restaurant's main feature is the open-air, inner courtyard consisting of a small area of rice terraces, lit up by a sea of candles flickering inside rolled up banana leaves. The terraces are surrounded by a ring of Balinese bale, with tables and chairs in light, pine-looking wood.
"The furniture is from a Scandinavian furniture producer based in Bali," said Mari Anne proudly. In this peaceful sanctuary, far from the tourist resort's busy streets, guests are invited to take refuge, mingle and relax over Norwegian home cooking, along with newspapers, WiFi Internet and of course, lots of coffee.
Bali does not have a large Norwegian expat community, but those that reside here are joined by the thousands more who every year make the trip to Southeast Asia on holiday, as well as the hundreds of students who choose one of the four Norwegian schools in Bali for their compulsory pre-university course.
Agnes Christiansen, head of GOstudy, one such school, said she thinks Mormors Hus will become a popular gathering spot for the students.
"This is a place they can come when they miss the familiar," she said, adding that she is likely to become a frequent customer herself. "I will definitely bring my five year old daughter, Tess, here to enjoy proper Norwegian food."
Other Norwegian expats, including Hanne Refsnes, Espen Lode Tonnesen and Daniel Pladsg*rd Warren, were also keen, while several non-Norwegians said they were curious to get to know the Norwegian culinary tradition.
In addition to running Mormors Hus, Mari Anne also works as a hotel director.
"I don't really have time to start a restaurant but I just had to do it anyway," she laughed. "It's my dream!"

Police say DNA tests have now confirmed that Noordin Mohammed Top was one
of three people killed in a shoot-out on Thursday.

[Nanan Sukarna, National Police Spokesman]:
"The forensics identification process, including fingerprints and DNA, has confirmed the body is that of Noordin Mohammad Top."
Top was killed when police raided a house on Java island.
They were looking for men linked to two suicide bombings at luxury hotels in Jakarta in July.
The Malaysian-born militant had been a wanted man for years.
He was suspected of setting up a violent splinter group of the militant network Jemaah Islamiah.
It's been linked to several atrocities in Bali and Jakarta in recent years.
The timing of Top's death couldn't be better for the Indonesian authorities.
America had been putting pressure on police to capture of kill him before President Obama visits the country in November.

Those of you who read my weekly free Bali News and Views are well aware that back in March I stuck my neck out and predicted' Economy had bottomed and would soon recover.
At the time few agreed. Shortly thereafter economies such as China, India and Australia declared no more recession and last night the head of the federal reserve in America agreed.
This is great news for the world and especially Bail, Indonesia who had actually not had a serious recession but in fact is seeing record tourism and recently improved real estate markets.
So now that your job is not in jeopardy book a flight and come to the best Island in the world.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Tuesday that the recession has ended, at least based on the numbers.
"From a technical perspective, the recession is very likely over at this point," Bernanke told a conference at the Brookings Institution. But "it's still going to feel like a very weak economy for some time."
Bernanke added there is a risk that labor markets will remain weak through 2010 because growth will be too anemic to create jobs. Many economists now expect the labor market to recover slowly, he noted.
Taxpayers Beware, AIG Still in Need of Rescue
WSJ's Dennis Berman tells colleague Evan Newmark why we should still care about AIG. He says taxpayers should know that parts of the insurer are still in need of rescue and that they will most likely be the ones footing the bill.
Unless the economy can manage growth stronger than its long-term trend rate, "unemployment will be slow -- slow to come down," he said. "It will come down, but it may take some time."
After acknowledging that economic forecasting "is not one of your most precise sciences," Bernanke said most forecasters think economic growth in 2010 will be moderate because of "ongoing headwinds," including financial and credit problems, sectoral adjustments in the economy, the desire of families to pay off debt and the need for the federal government to restrain spending.
Vince Reinhart, a former top Fed staffer who is now at the American Enterprise Institute, said the technical end of the recession is more about arithmetic than anything else.
"June was mostly likely the trough. Growth will be positive in the third quarter," he commented. "All that tells you is that market economies do not stay in free fall. That doesn't tell you that we have a durable expansion in motion, it doesn't tell you growth is assured in 2010 and it doesn't tell you that the unemployment rate goes down."

Bernanke also expressed confidence that Congress would complete work on new rules for Wall Street.
Many analysts have raised doubts that Congress could grapple with reforming the health-care system and the financial framework this year. But Bernanke didn't share this doubt.
"I am quite confident comprehensive reform will be coming," the Fed chief said.
One of the reforms that's needed is to provide some way to unwind big financial institutions "in a way that would impose market discipline, impose losses on creditors, but would avoid the disorderly chaotic type of collapse that we saw with Lehman a year ago."
The bulk of Bernanke's remarks was devoted to a defense of the response from the Fed and its global partners to the financial crisis. Read his prepared remarks.
Bernanke said global regulators acted swiftly in the wake of last September's financial crisis and succeeded in bringing the global economy back from the brink of collapse. There is no longer widespread fear of a financial collapse and economic activity is leveling out, he added.
Bernanke's remarks were similar to a speech he gave in August at the Fed's annual retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Since the August speech, Bernanke was reappointed by President Barack Obama to a second four-year term at the helm of the central bank.

The calling service works when a member tweets “@call @twittername.” The tweet will cause both phones to ring, and the Twitterers will be connected without the service sharing either telephone number.
JAJAH@Call also works independent
of the platform you use, so whether
you use the web, a destkop client,
or a mobile application when
tweeting, the tweet-to-call service
should work without hiccup.
Though pretty unique, JAJAH@Call has
some interesting conditions
associated with the service, none
more interesting than the 2 minute
talk time limitation, which the
company considers the verbal
equivalent of a tweet. Also, in
order to work, both parties — caller
and recipient — need to be members
of the JAJAH@Call service.

We’re quite intrigued by the voice-over-Twitter idea, though we do think it could create funky situations where you receive phone calls from Twitterers you don’t really want to talk to. In some instances, this could be a great way to immediately contact someone you need to reach on a pressing matter, but in others, it could turn into a big if not awkward distraction.
We can just envision the uncomfortable greetings now. Hello, I’m so and so, and I follow you on Twitter, my Twitter name is XXXX. Do you want to go out on a date sometime? Or, say for instance, you’re in the middle of a sentence and reach the 2 minute limit and you’re both cut off from each other. One saving grace is that calls can only be made to people who follow you, which means should a particular caller annoy you, you can unfollow them on Twitter to prevent future voice communication.
We have to give it to JAJAH for pushing the Twitter envelope and are looking forward to giving the service a try. Let us know your take on voice-over-Twitter in the comments.
